Subject:Writer's Block: Banished to Space.
Time:6:12 pm.

If you were exiled to outer space, where would you be sent and what would you bring along?

View 501 Answers

The first obvious bit of apparatus would be a sturdy craft that somehow provided air, water and food. I'm not at all concerned about the where.

Assuming that escaping my exile is not the goal, I would gather as much information and parts as I could to create and build an android with artificial intelligence. This would provide for more than enough activity to fill what's left of my lifetime. If I was successful, my android could return after my death and replicate itself into a grand army and overthrow the powers that exiled me.

Subject:SciFi Surplus Drama and Fiction
Time:7:05 pm.
I am going to do my best to get back to writing. Part of the process for me involves writing every day. There are many things that I would like to write and there are many different things I would like to work on. Of course the fiction that is associated with SciFi Surplus is my first objective. I've also got a couple short stories(Renaelia and Hickton) that I have rolling around in my head as well as a novel outline (Android Moon).

I would very much like to get the drama (including funny commercials) restarted on the show. I'm starting as simple a story as I can come up with that puts Casey in the jalopy-saucer and establishes that it's his job to work in "future-radio;" making commercials, reporting future news and of course gathering science fiction knowledge.

I'm just putting everyone that has me in their livejournal friends list on notice that they should expect that I will be writing about stuff they may or may not find interesting because this is one of the things that I have to do to make sure I'm writing something. I'm also thinking that I may start telling the SFS listeners that this is my personal blog.

Subject:iPod Nano
Time:12:22 am.
I got an 8Gig iPod Nano yesterday and I'm learning how to use it. Learning isn't so much the operative word because my Sansa mp3 player was ridiculously difficult to use. I needed something that would make getting podcasts easier and this does it very nicely. :)

Subject:Comcast Scifi Channel HD
Time:9:22 pm.
Sorry I don't post much here. I've been busy with SciFi Surplus. I just had to jump in here to express my joy that Comcast now offers the Scifi Channel and the CW in Hi-Def. I was really getting tired of watching shows on those stations in the crappy old format because they really look bad digitized and expanded or whatever weirdness is going on.

Subject:Podcast News!!
Time:8:50 pm.
I'm almost finished putting together the first podcast that I'm sure everyone has already heard about. Boy Plankton got our SciFiSurplus.com site up and running in a fundamental sense. (Thanks BP) The first episode, "Revenge of the Pilot" will be available on July 4th, 2007. That gives me an easy birthday to remember. ;)
I encourage everyone that would like to participate to get in touch with me with any and all ideas you may have. This is a very ambitious project and I know that I can't do it alone.
IN OTHER NEWS!!!
My son, just finished his first little-league play-off game against the number one seed and they won and made the other team cry. I'm so proud!

Subject:SciFi Surplus to Produce Podcast
Time:7:25 am.
I've been researching podcasting pretty heavily the past couple of weeks and I've been stumbling on some of the issues. The biggest blockages in the thought process have been answering the two questions; "What is it going to be about?", and "What kind of show is it going to be?"

I'm extremely excited to let you know that I have decided on a name for the show that helps to answer these questions:

SciFi Surplus: A Geek's Guide to News, Tech, and Entertainment

I've been working around the clock (except for sleeping and watching tv) getting a studio put together in my office that is capable of reasonable audio production.

Any suggestions or insights are appreciated. I will have a couple short examples of the show ready in the next few days and I'll start full-blown production by the end of the month. The show will be based at SciFiSurplus.com.

I'm taking a minute to express my feelings about a topic that is really making me a bit insecure. I find that I am coveting [info]boyplanktonblog located at boyplankton.com. I got stuck there for about 45 minutes the other day and was really entertained. -Peace, Yo!

Subject:$GLOBALS Domination Quest Continues
Time:1:49 pm.

I was asking designjunky and boyplankton for some help with a function that I needed to write. I wanted a simple snippet that
would output a variable name and it's value to the screen for debugging PHP. I just thought I'd post my solution.

The difficulty I was having was being able to pass a variable's name and a variable's value while only typing the
variable once.

----- PHP On -----

function output($var)
{
     $name = '$'.$var;
     $value = $GLOBALS[$var];
     echo $name;
     echo " = ";
     var_export($value);
}
$room_dept = 'bathroom';
output(room_dept);

----- PHP Off -----

This will output: $room_dept = 'bathroom'

Subject:Internet Access, 9600 Baud, and More!
Time:9:46 am.
Mood: nauseated.

I was digging through my old file cabinet doing a little bit of spring cleaning and found something that falls somewhere between woefully nostalgic and historically abhorrent. This little item is an new condition, unopened, circa 1994, version 1.1 America Online installation disk for Microsoft Windows. Here are a few of the highlights. There are more pictures after the cut.

Apparently, the biggest benefit of this service includes 10 FREE hours of access to something called the "Internet" where you can "download" things at an amazing rate. In about the same time that it takes me to drive to Salt Lake and back to pick up a large box of assorted disks with programs, games and utilities from a guy who has no clue what to do with them, I could drive to Salt Lake and back to pick up a small box of about 30 blank disks and have just enough time to start to download something. All of this for free! Except of course gas for my van and the cost of disks.

There is of course added value in the form of a statement on the inside of the package: "If you're having trouble connecting to America Online for Windows or need a different disk type or size, call us toll-free at 1-800-827-6364."

Subject:eGroupWare is a done deal!
Time:3:26 am.
I have been spending the last week trying to setup a collaboration server on my local network. My solution was to use the super basic Debian Minimal Network Install iso and only use the most conservative stable repositories at debian.org. As it turns out, the Debian repository doen't have php5 so there wasn't a way for apt to automatically try to install it.

The problem that I have been having is that Ubuntu would install php5 as an apache2 module and php4 in cgi mode. This isn't the way that eGroupWare wanted it and I really don't like that kind of CRAZY-Ass Redundancy (CRAZY-AR) on my servers.

BTW, I had a crazy dream that the Chicago Bears actually won the NFC Championship game and are going to the Superbowl. I'm sure I'm going to wake up soon. :)

Subject:More Command Prompt Tinkering
Time:7:42 pm.
BASH Command Prompt

I'm sure this is powerfully dull for most, but after getting some BASH scripting help from [info]boyplankton I just wanted to show my latest prompts. What's important here is that I'm including some rudamentary flow control so I only have to have one set of scripts to customize both the root and casey prompts for simplicity sake.

Another feature makes us of the .bash_aliases script so I can get "ls -ahlp --color=auto" by simply typing "ls". I can also get a whopping "cd ..; ls -ahlp --color=auto" with just "..". My favorite of course, is creating the command "rebash" by filling in with "source ~/.bashrc".

Subject:One little success for me...
Time:12:34 pm.
Mood: optimistic.

...is still just a little success for me. I finally got some networking things figured out and I feel great about the screen-cap above. It shows that all of the machines in my sci-fi harem are connected, have proper ip addresses and have host names that show up on the router.

This was a challenge for me because of my Fundamental Inability to Comprehend Networking and All That Entails (FICNATE). Because I managed to pull it off, I now have a fully working platform for learning how to do load balancing, test file backup schemes, and a whole bunch of things I can try without crashing my live servers. There's a whole bunch of stuff that I would like to try and I have to start a list.

If you have any ideas for things that can be done with my network, the more absurd the better, let me know and I'll scribe it to a text file somewhere in my house.

Subject:Acronym Of The Day: S.N.A.F.U.
Time:8:53 am.
It seems that in getting cat 5 cable to my office downstairs, I've made every mistake that could possibly have been done. Fortunately for me I also made the mistakes of not budgeting or measuring very well so I still have about 600 feet of cable. That's enough to re-do the entire project at least 5 times. (I'll work out the math later.)

Apparently, you're NOT supposed to run data lines along the same path as power lines. This will force me to strategically remove drywall from the garage and create a neat, centrally located hub that leaves no wiring of any kind exposed. I'm a big fan of that but I really need to get lots and lots of actual work done. For the time being, the garage is just going to have to be a mess of wires with odd holes and whatnot.

Well, here she is. My new dual-monitor desktop wallpaper for my Linux/WinXP system...

Click for bigger. I didn't want to blow anyone's web pages up so the preview is smaller. In fact the actual image is 2560x1024. That's a lot of Barbarella
